What We Have Been Working on for You: OFVGA Activities Update December 2019
What We're Working on For You
This monthly newsletter is to keep you, our members, informed about what the key issues and files are that OFVGA is currently tackling on behalf of growers.
OFVGA fall lobby day
OFVGA spent the day at Queen’s Park on November 26 meeting with MPPs and staff, including Ernie Hardeman (Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs), Bill Walker (Associate Minister of Energy), Lindsey Park (Parliamentary Assistant to the Attorney General), Sam Oosterhoff (Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education), Ted Arnott (Speaker), and John Vanthof (Deputy NDP leader and agriculture critic).
Key issues included the need to protect and strengthen risk management programming in a way that meets the objectives of both growers and government, ensuring growers are paid for their produce in a timely manner, and drawing attention to how essential the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program are to the production of fruits and vegetables in Ontario. OFVGA also highlighted the diversity and size of the sector and the important role it plays in the provincial economy. The day was well received and ended with an evening reception that was well attended by ministers and MPPs.
Latest status: OFVGA will be following up with individual meetings after the holidays with ministers who were unavailable during the Queen’s Park day.
